Hi there, i am the lucky owner of a 146 and 149 and love them. I have just found an original MB nib tesr set in box at a local shop. Are these rare? It's unused and looks great. At £700, is it worth the investment? Thanks!

hello robmcdade

A 'test set' is not rare, and kep p[opping up on eBay for ssale, usually at a better price than the oneyou quoted. They have the nib sizes engraved on it with "Test F' or "Test BB" etc. That reduces the price of the pen. They are otherwise normal pens, probably a 146 set (I jave also seen on the net a Boheme set). For Euro 700 it would be a good price in my opinion, as you would get 8 pens for the price of 2. Others may not agree. If you are thinking about selling them it may be difficult. I had a set and tried selling off the pens with nibs I did not want - no luck. The price offfered would not give you much profit, but you may break even on a few and end up with 3 or 4 that you like for the price of 1 may be.

The box may be a good investment for keeping your pens though, and would be almost free.

So think about it.

I would buy one at this price if I were you and did not have a set already - but thats me.

Enjoy your pens

Have a nice day

Thanks so much for your reply. I was going to buy the set to try and make a profit to be honest. I have read that the sell for up to 2500USD but i wasn't sure how true that is?

I have never seen a set sell for anywhere near to that price.

The problem with these sets is that they have been used as testers in a shop so there may be damage.

The engravings on them will put off many potential buyers.

If you wanted them for yourself then fair enough, but don't expect to make a profit by selling those that you don't want

Thanks Mason. This set has 9 in total with the ninth pen looking loike a 144. Any clues? If i got it for £600, that would equate to USD 900

Yeah, I have to agree with Mason here. That would be about $1100 Canadian, and at that price, I would jump all over it. If you decide to sell, you could probably get $1400--$1500 for the set. I'd keep it, myself.

Ideally the 9th pen is a document marker, 146 series, the 167 if I am not wrong

Enjoy your pens

Have a nice day

Usually the Montblanc Meisterstück Nib Selection included 9 pens, 8 of which were 146 (with EF - F - M - B - BB - OM - OB and OBB nibs) and 1 a converter/cartridge 145 Classique with S Stub nib.

Not the stub but "Special" nib. It is actually a Kugel point.

Thank you Hari. I was sure having read about the Kugel point, but I was unable to find the information again.

I am the fortunate owner of one Test BB 146, an exceptional pen.

The imprint, in gold, on the barrel, "Test BB" is my favorite feature other than the excellent BB nib.

When the pen arrived, the nib was set incorrectly, no section seal, and the BB feed had been swapped for a Fine feed, probably during servicing of the Test set. The nib lacks the proper radial support from the feed, but works for now until I can replace the feed.

The set is a wonderful find, gooood price, and an impressive collectors' item.

As Paul said, "at that price, I would jump all over it."

Test BB nib and vintage BB.
