Noodler's Empire Red

I LOVE this red ink. I've never really been a big fan of red inks (even though one of my all time favorites is Rouge Hematite :D ), but I'll definitely be getting a bottle of Empire Red. It has so much character.

I had to tweak the color (that's why the paper looks a bit pink), but I think it's fairly accurate.

I know I rated it 0 in the smears when dry category. The heavy Hunt and glass nib samples were dry, but had a tacky residue afterward. I suppose that category needs to be bumped up a bit.

This has some really nice shading. I'm not generally a fan of red inks either (Rouge Hematite, aside, and I don't think of that as red so much as red-orange) -- I'm more inclined to look at pink/magenta. But this is a pretty color.

Gorgeous review, thank you. The red seems to be 'glowing', its lovely, but I am not sure about the ashy aspect though! I think my favourite reds have to be J Herbin 1670, Diamine Poppy and Diamine Wild Strawberry!

I was shocked by how much I like this ink. It's my go-to red. It seems to get less "ashy" on the page over time; my notebooks with Empire Red pages seem to have become noticeably more saturated when reviewing notes days or weeks later. And the waterproofness is extraordinary. I ran a page of Empire Red notes under hot water for 10 minutes once. Literally no visible change. I let the same page soak overnight. Again, literally no visible change. The paper didn't even turn slightly pink. Dried out, the page looked like it had never encountered water.
