Pilot Desk Pen Medium Nib

Recommended Posts

Ok, do fora while now I have been looking for a fountain pen to start with. I have looked at multiple pens and descriptions and I have decided to start with a desk pen, mainly for its style. Other pens I considered were the pilot 78g, lamy safari, pelikano, Platinum carbon desk pen, and the sailor desk pen. Since I have chosen a desk pen I am looking at the pilot medium-nib desk pen, sailor ef desk pen, and the platinum carbon desk pen. They all look good, but the pilot seems to have no reviews. So I was wondering, if anyone had this and could tell me how good it is. Thanks!

Pilot has several models of desk pen. I have a DPN-70, which is near the low end, and it writes well.

That waste one I was looking at. Do you know how it compares to the other two desk pens I mentioned?

Also, what other models in pilot do they make?

There is a page here that lists Pilot's current offerings. It loos like the DPN-70 is actually the cheapest. I think the others are harder to find here.

I haven't used the Sailor or Platinum desk pens, but both companies also make good nibs.

Thank you. Can you give me a little review on it? Also could you recommend any other good starter pens (preferably medium nib). If it helps I'm left handed.

I really appreciate it!

I haven't used my Pilot DPN-70 very much, since still I haven't got around to making a desk base for it. Mine has a fine nib, so it may not match the pen you are looking at. It's glossy black plastic, which hasn't suffered much lying in a drawer. The nib is plated steel, smooth but not slippery. The cap is a slightly different plastic; it fits onto the section by friction, and has a small hexagonal part around the opening so the pen won't roll away if you don't have a desk base.

I don't have time this evening to set up proper lighting, so this will have to do:

A member asked me to describe the shape of the section, to determine whether the pen might fit an existing base, so here are some more measurements showing the taper of the section and cap.

@ kps do you know if the DPN-70 also comes with a medium nib? I can only find the extra fine nib.

Thanks.

Not kps but the DPN-70 nowadays only comes in EF.

The upper models are offered with medium nibs as well, see here:

Sorry for the late reply! What a pity....But at least the dpn 200/ 500 looks a lot like the dpn-70.

Thanks a bunch Hari :)

I just got a DPN-200 with a Medium nib.

It is a NICE pen.

The length brings back memories of using a similar long desk pen when I was back in school. And it balances well.

The pen did not come with a converter, but I had a Con-50 converter that I got for my Pilot Metroplitan, and it fit just fine.

The pen writes really smooth with Cross/Pelikan black ink.

But the Cross black ink did not come out BLACK, it was a VERY dark gray (almost black). I think the ink flow of the Cross ink in the 200 is just slow enough to prevent the pen from putting down enough ink to make the ink line BLACK. I did an ink comparison with a Parker Classic with a F nib and Cross ink, and the ink line from the Parker was BLACK. This backs up my theory that the ink flow in the 200 is not sufficient for the dryer Cross/Pelikan ink.

I will be switching my pen over to Waterman black ink, which is a wetter ink, in hopes of getting a BLACK ink line.

My next task is to get a base for the pen.
