Finding The Perfect Inkwell

My search for inkwells has me looking at vintage inkwells, and even old small bottles which would fit the bill. ( I love old glass ).

I think as a fallback I will buy some old ink bottles,, From what I understand the older Visconti ink bottles are nice. but hard to find.

Searching for inkwells has really forced me back to ebay.

I have a few coming from the UK, deco style.

But here is one I picked up,, it is actually large ( 4" by 2" ).. I don't think this is the right lid for it, but for the price it is a great inkwell ( holds about 40 ml of Ink )..

it is not flawless, but nothing major wrong with it.

I really like it. Especially the ledge, reminiscent of the small Herbin and 50-ml Pelikan bottles, but better. Both ledge and cap are solid pewter. Width and total height each 2 inches. From (at least sold by) Rubinato in Italy. Check them out. They have a lot of other goodies.

But hang on! Products > Classic Line > Glass > 252bis: as beautiful as it looks, the lid is only connected with a hinge and there is no seal. I.e. after a while filled with ink, it'll look like this:

For an inkwell that's usable in modern standards I just go the way of using the bottle that the ink came in. No fuss, no mess, and if you buy a 30 - 60ml size it's small enough to take around with you as I do to work. I like old decorative wells (see the other thread on inkwells going on at the mo, but I wouldn't waste my time and effort trying to make them air-tight etc or topping them up with water each day. Use the old ones for display, and small ink bottles for day-to-day use.

Currently searching for these parts:

A swirl of bubbles are in the glass. It is softball size, with the insert will hold 50ml ink with out it 70ml. The polished brass cap presses air tight shut.

Can be used as a paper weight also.

That is the problem, what ink am I going to use as a designated ink?

What 3-5 nibs/pens are going to be inked with it?

I need to get a little back light for it.

Flip top ink wells dry out fairly fast. It's not a problem if one is using an ink regularly; make that daily.

Back in the day, one had only a couple of inks for use in a double ink well (black or blue and red) or singles.

As long as you do as they did in the old days; keep the majority of the ink in it's original bottle for refilling the ink well every thing is fine. If you use the ink in your inkwell as your normal ink, if not you will have to re-hydrate the ink. Just keep in mind about how much ink was in the well when you last ignored it.

There are vintage ink wells with twist on caps, which actually suit 'modern' days multiple ink use more; when displaying an ink.

My wife recently finished a bottle of perfume.

A quick twist with some pliers and the spray thingy was off. Lots of thorough washing and I have a lovely inkwell - a cube of clear glass with a pen-sized hole in the top. It just doesn't have a cap

I suppose a small bung or cork would do.
