Rare Nibs

I'm not quite sure where this topic would normally reside but since Richard Binder posted a thread about them I thought this would be a good shot.

I'm facinated by the nib or "pen" portion of a fountain pen. What rare nibs are being hoarded out there in Pendom? If you have something interesting, especially a loose nib waiting for that perfect holder, take a picture and show it. I'd love to see it. I'll post a pic to start things off when the day is done.

I don't think any of these nibs would really be considered "rare." However, they are definitely uncommon, and I would hate to have to find replacements.

All these are in pen and are used (the #6 Waterman, not too often.)

The only nib I'm hoarding, in that I am waiting for a pen to put it in is a Parker 'Vacuum Filler' nib.

Best regards, greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

Greg,

Those Waterman's are incredible. Thanks for posting. I have nothing in comparison, but it is great to see a vintage nib with so much tipping material.

Here is a Parker Lucky Curve I found with quite a bit that I put on a Jade Duofold.

Yup. I stumbled on a Parker 45 with a Right Hand Oblique. Didn't see one before and haven't seen one since.

Here's a Canadian Duofold nib with what appears to be an iridium mine attached to the business end.

Here's a pair of nibs in NOS stickered Sheaffer OS Radite model 8 flat-tops - fine flex on the left, medium flex on the right, according to the stickers.

A Sheaffer flexible Lifetime nib. Sheaffer began offering flexible Lifetime nibs in 1930, according to ads I've seen.

I'll try my first picture post - sorry for the quality of the picture - I need to get a light tent (and learn to properly use the camara!). This all assumes the picture posts.

The nib is in a Sheaffer Balance, one of the early, long tail models. The pen is Jade and the nib is a factory stub.

Any chance of a full picture of the NOS Radites?

Here's the interesting parts -- note the absence of a White Dot on the caps -- these were not Lifetime pens. I speculate that Sheaffer would not offer their Lifetime guarantee on pens with flexible nibs at the time these were made.

It actually has a lump of iridium attached to it. My assumption is that the nib is a broad. It certainly writes like one. I've owned plenty of medium nibbed pens of this vintage but never with this much iridium on the nib.

And the last of this grouping is the rarest nib I own. Its a full flex Weidlich and Simpson number 6. The company became simply Weidlich after 1921. This nib dates between 1910 and 1915 and is probably the largest size they made. A hen's tooth to be sure.

I picked up a couple of Snorkel parts pens today and one of them had this wonderful Broad 14k Triumph nib. I already have a Broad Snorkel nib (fantastic writers!) but the price was right. If you get a chance to buy one, don't pass it by. These absolutely destroy a modern Broad as an everyday writer.

Weird.

Having NOT seen this thread, i posted a "rare nib" shot to the Parker section of this site. Then i found this thread. Figure it belongs here too.

Y'all wanna take stab at what's up here? I do have Parker literature for it.

--------------

Long Charmed by Vacsoterica- those exotic, uncommon, and downright funky parts of Vacdom, I've been quite happy to own the nib shown below. It has some clues as to era, but also has a most uncommon finding. Parker literature exists to confirm the meaning of this finding. I've seen just three of these. Own one. Like it. Do look over the pics. You are not likely to encounter many.
