Can you give me more info on that.... lamp? candle? Whatever it is, it's very cool!

kiavonne, your candle stand is the bomb. I have seen pics in antique catalogs but did not know anyone who owned one!

Thanks, Brad and Joi!

The "lamp" is actually what is called a wax jack. The true sole purpose of this piece is to be lit in order to heat up a block or piece of sealing wax. Yup. It was/is used to melt sealing wax. Some think the wax on the spindle is the sealing wax, and then the stand would be tipped to drip the wax onto the document. This is not the case. The wax on the spindle has a braided cotton wick, and it burns only long enough to heat a piece of wax for applying to the document. The top cup or tray catches the small amount of the wax melted from the spindle wax. Many wax jacks have a bottom tray, sort of like a chamberstick, and with a finger and thumb ring to carry it. The bottom tray would catch errant drips of the sealing wax, and also be a place to place one's seal for the ready. Wax jacks did not put out enough light to be a light source. There is another light on in the room in which I took my photo. The wax jack dates back to the 17th century. So does the recipe for J.Herbin's traditional, breakable sealing wax (without wicks). I have an iron wax jack that dates to the late 17th century in my collection. The one in my picture above is Mexican pewter, and dates around the early 1900's. It is the least expensive of my pieces (I got it for a flea market price you would not believe), and was more or less a reproduction of the silver and silver plated wax jacks popular at the time.

There are now "coil candles" on the market today, which emulate the style of the wax jack. Push up so much of the coil into the holder and the novelty candle will put itself out once it reaches the holder. If one wanted, they probably could use one of these novelty candles as a wax jack, as the original design intended, but the modern ones are huge and the wax is triple in thickness to the originals. Yeah, I have one, just for the sake of it, lol.

Here is a picture of a few of my wax jacks. Note that someone (not me, was sold this way) tried to replace the original wax coil on the brass jack with a modern wax candle coil. Doesn't work, does not fit at all. I may have to make my own wax coil to fit the jack properly.

And then a picture showing the modern novelty coil candle in comparison.

Very cool! I am definitely looking about getting into wax seals! This doesn't help...

Very nice seals. So you were not kidding when you said "Dexter is the Rolls Royce of seals." They look really elaborate. As soon as I can decide on a design I'm definetely getting one. Thank you for posting your collection.

very nice collection. mine is not near as fancy. and very different from a conventional and a vintage look of a regular wax seal. i use a chinese stone name stamp with a chinese character carved on it and use that as my wax seal instead.

It was a long wait since I placed my order in early November, but I received the final result this week from Dexters, after following kiavonne's recommendation in many threads such as the long running "Show us your seals here." I was always blown away by Edgar Allan Bo's sailing ship seal in red wax also at that link.

Having a personal connection here locally to the U.S. Coast Guard's Eagle, I asked Dexter if they could make a seal from this photo, for my own personal use. I knew the detail of the photo was way beyond what could be made, but this was my starting point.

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/pike444/Eagle-Originals.jpg

I worked with Kate & Simon at Dexter's, who are absolutely wonderful and responsive people. Had one proof that I made some changes on (with kiavonne's help), and the second proof looked perfect. I intentionally lowered my expectations because I know there is a limit of how much detail can be deep carved onto a small metal seal, vs. a photograph.

When I opened the two boxes, and first looked at the seal, I was stunned at the quality, but was not quite sure how to "read" the details in the 3 dimensional reverse relief metal. Then I opened the second box and saw the actual seal in wax that Dexter made from this actual stamp. I could not believe my eyes. I still cannot believe what I have in front of me after two days. This is like magic, and so beautiful in person that it brings tears to my eyes at the accomplishment it represents. They used a white wax, and coated the seal with smoke-soot from a paraffin lamp to give the contrast you see.

I took an overview photo, and then used my cell phone macro lens to show the close up detail that goes even beyond what you can see with normal vision. (These are clickable thumbnails)

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/pike444/Eagle-Seal2s.jpg

I will do some other impressions of my own in various wax colors, but to be able to clearly read the letters on the side of the ship just blows my mind. I did not think about it with the proof, but assuming the wind is behind the ship, filling her sails, Dexter even made sure the waves were breaking over in the right direction if the wind had been coming from the right/behind the ship! It's just unbelievable seeing it in person.

Also, curious about the smoke technique, I just took a pinch of cotton from an ordinary cotton ball, put about 3-4 drops of 3-in-1 household oil on it, and lit it while on a stone outside. That little bit of cotton and oil gave off plenty of nice, dark smoke on this Ebay stamp, which I just waved back and forth over the smoke trails until it was all well covered. Then I set it aside, got the wax ready, and pressed it into some ivory colored wax. It's a great accent effect, and easily, completely washes off stamp with dish soap and water.

Wait until some people get an envelope with this Eagle seal on it.

Well, here is my latest. There isn't much more I can say about Dexter seals that hasn't already been said many times (mostly by me, lol). Only two more to go in this series, but it will probably take me a couple more years. Then, I should be done. Should be. (yeah, right)

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

    • T.D. Rabbit 31 Jan 8:11
Coffee is too light to write with though I've tried.
    • Astronymus 29 Jan 21:46
You can use coffee and all other kinds of fluid with a glas pen. 😉

I can't seem to edit my profile, which is years out of date, because I've only returned to FPN again recently. How do you fix it?
    • mattaw 5 Dec 14:25
@lantanagal did you do anything to fix that? I get that page every time I try to go to edit my profile...

Super excited to go check out the PDX Pen Bazaar today. I volunteered to help set up tables. It should be super fun, followed by Xmas tree shopping. 😁

Fine-have you had a nibmeister look at it?
    • carlos.q 29 Oct 15:19
@FineFinerFinest: have you seen this thread? https://www.fountainpennetwor...nging-pelikan-nibs/#comments
    • FineFinerFinest 24 Oct 8:52
No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27
I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). Every hobby needs a hobby, eh ...

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...
    • OldFatDog 26 July 19:41
I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
    • RegDiggins 23 July 12:40
Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
