My Second Pelikan - What Is It?

Recommended Posts

Picked this pen up off Ebay a few weeks ago. I checked out the Pelikan-Guide pinned at the top of the page but that did not help.

It is a C/C filler, 132 mm or 5.2 inches capped. Plastic throughout. Both the pocket clip and the nib sport the Pelikan logo. Around the bottom of the cap: "Pelikan - Germany"

I am just not sure what it is. The nib and shape look like the Steno, but the cap is plastic, not metal.

Any information would be appreciated.

I think it's a vintage Pelikano - 1960s, maybe? The Steno used the same body style, though I'm not sure if the Pelikanos of that vintage were also available with metal caps.

That's an interesting pen! Not a Pelikano. The design is very similar to the "Lady Pen", so I would guess your pen dates from around 1973. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your answers:

I have to agree with Readymade, I have trouble believing this is a Pelikano: All the Pelikanos I have seen have that name. This says Pelikan. Also all of them (with the exception of the current version) sport metal caps this one does not. And all but the first or second versions (and I am pretty sure this pen is not that old) have very "ergonomic" sections.

Thank you Plumeau, but I had previously checked out that wonderful site. Unfortunately, I am not finding anything in the list which precisely matches what I have. It is very similar to the P18/P478 illustrated (both in terms of the nib and section as well as the clip) but the material is wrong. If the P25 came in the same shape, and was available in red, then maybe that is the answer.

I was hopping for something a little more definitive. The mystery continues.

Hi,

According to old Japanese Catalog, this one seems to be the closest.

post-25796-0-53515100-1326631056.jpg

Although the catalog says this model M480 being fitted with gold plated steel nib, yours seems to be stainless steel nib.

Replaced nib or gold color faded, I suppose.

#Other models with plastic cap and Pelikan logo clip

M465 Chrome trim with plain stainless steel nib

M484 Gold trim with 14K nib

MK30 is a piston filler.

MK30 is equipped with a 14K gold nib

MK30's clip is not flat and straight like this one.

Usually, Pelikan's model "M" is for piston filling system and "P" is for cartridge/converter filler.

But, in this catalog, M480 is clearly stated to be a cartridge/converter filler. Very strange.

You can find a image of original catalog here.

Thank you TorPelikan. I think you found it. It cannot be an MK30. I handled one of those and the clip, nib and feel (thickness or quality) of the plastic are different. And mine is not a piston filler.

Although it is not clear from the photos, the nib of my pen is actually "yellow" so it has some sort of gold plating to it.

The picture you posted of the M480 looks exactly like my pen. I cannot see any differences. Thank you

One last question (as I don't even pretend to read Japanese) what is the difference between the M484 and the M480 such that you are sure it is a the M480? From the photos I cannot tell them apart.

Thanks and Best Regards

Thanks Dr. Lopez,

I really need to read better.

I threw "Pelikan M480" at Google. I was surprised by the results: All the Asian results (I think they are all Japanese) show my pen. Almost all the European ones (and most were German) were Piston fill and had the color scheme of the Reform 1745. Although the shape looked right, the Piston surprised me.

Who knows maybe this was a special export version for the Asian market. I did get it from a reseller based in India.
