Onward Moon And Stars

I acquired an old lever fill that seems to be a knock-off of the EPENCO Moon and Stars pens I see popping up now and again. I love the motif. This one says Onward on the clip and the barrel exhibits some deformation at the lever but still a nice looking pen, I think.

When I got it apart, I noticed that the feed has a hole centered in the rear which leads to a corresponding hole in the middle of the ink channel. This reminded me of the set-up of my Eversharp Skyline. Would this pen have had a breather tube originally? If so, what are the consequences of trying to fill it without one?post-74911-0-67186100-1325256211.jpgpost-74911-0-19501700-1325256225.jpg

As I am reconstructing in my mind about changing the sac on a Skyline I don't remember a breather tube. I would assemble without one and see what kind of flow you get.

Also FYI the Epenco pattern was also known as Merlin. I have one of those and it is quite a nice pattern

The breather tube just allows you to fill the sac with more ink. The pen will still work fine without a breather tube.

I don't know if this pen had a breather tube in the first place. I think it's unlikely because Onward was a "third-tier" brand.

OK - I went ahead and put a new sac on. Filled it up with Lamy black. It fairly gushes; laying down a nice smooth med to broad line. I used it all day yesterday and it never once hesitated when called upon. That cheap Durium nib is unexpectedly nice. I'm thinking of drilling holes in all of my feeds now!
