Writing/doodling Samples

i've never written a topic in this forum so i figured i'd start.

i've been a lurker here for a few years now. i thank all of you here before me for being able to inform me of so much that help to inform me so i could create my own likes and dislikes over time. i tip my hat to anyone that contributed to the collective knowledge about a subject of which i was interested.

my first fountain pen was a blue pilot varsity. within a week i graduated to an old sheaffer snorkel statesman that i picked up from an antique shop. i used it religiously (it had a pretty significant impact on me that reshaped my journaling habits) but after about six months, i broke the section by sitting on it after slipping it into my back pocket randomly (d'oh!).

i currently have a three pen rotation: rotring 600 1st gen (xf), a super needlepoint (0.1mm) modified lamy 27n, and a pelikan 205(xf). these pens are my workhorses, in that order. they come in handy when i doodle. their nib sizes come in handy, especially because i prefer microcalligraphy over what you might see someone who uses a triple broad writes. i like to believe that thanks to these pens i had a "reason" to get serious about practicing self-reflection and drawing.

here are a few samples of my writing and drawing:

i use pocket-sized, grid lined paper journals (3.5 x 5.5 inch).

if you'd like to see more, you can check out the place i post these things:

i mainly use noodler's bulletproof black, but i've also been fond of using some vintage black ink (osmiroid), diamine's registrar (blue/black), noodler's BSB, and pilot/nakimi blue. these (edit: being just blue/black) probably seem pretty boring, and i would like to see more color in my work, but you can't knock what works for you (and these inks all have traits that rule).

i hope to try my hand at copperplate or specerian calligraphy soon, as i've recently ordered a noodler's flex pen. waiting for it in the mail!

also, this might be off the subject, but if anyone could send me a large(ish) ink sample of montblanc's racing green, i would be forever in debt-- cant find that stuff anywhere!

cheers,

-a

Awesome! Thanks for sharing.

Love your note books. Looked at the whole lot of em.

Check out my worms if you get a chance.

I can send you a sample of Noodler's Zhivago if you'd like a dark green. It's my absolute favorite.

i especially liked the spoon and the cutaway drawing of one of the (bug?) worms. i've read about zhivago--what do you like about it that makes it your favorite?

Welcome to FPN. You've been really lucky with your 2nd pen, too bad that it broke in such a way.

Wow! Beautiful! :notworthy1:

I can see why you love those particular nibs - they allow you to truly make the most of your small, highly portable journals. Do please update with new scans when you get a chance?

And let us know what you think of your Noodler's Flex once you've had a chance to test drive it. Did you get the regular flex or the Ahab? I have both and enjoy them for journaling. The Ahab has a larger section, so I find it more comfortable for extended periods of writing.

It's a great feeling when we can find a pen/nib combo that makes us feel compelled to write/draw! :D

All the Best,

Gem

WOW. :notworthy1: :notworthy1:

I just started doodling with fountain pens and trying to get into it some more. Your work is beautiful and inspiring. :) I'd show you my one and only fountain pen artwork I did a few days ago... but now I'm all self-conscious :) :notworthy1:

Are you all self-taught? Or did you take classes too? (An art hakwon perhaps?)

Either way, thank you for sharing :)

wow, thanks so much for your compliment! i should probably blame my mom for this as she is an artist, but honestly my process is write down what i see, copy the URLs of images that inspire me, and journal about my thoughts to keep the creative juices flowing. my only suggestion is keep it up, because as long as you're doing, you're improving (even if it doesn't feel that way in the present, you'll benefit from hard work now-- later on).

i started a couple years ago with doodles and primarily just journaling, but the doodles got bigger and bigger. now i try to complete two panels in a sort of collage type way and then write around them on the other pages.

i haven't gone to a hagwon for art. actually, i never really liked anything i did in classes of any kind. i have an idea and when im excited about it, i do it (usually if i have time away from my students. i teach at a daehag.)

edit: for clarity.

LOVE the power line post-thingy. I stared at it for about a minute thinking it was an abstract rendering of an instrument of some kind and finally saw that it was the top of a power line pole. Very cool!
