Mercurochrome Vs. Noodler's Dragon's Napalm

I saw a thread a while back of someone who had some real Mercurochrome and wanted to test it against Noodler's Dragon's Napalm Ink. I don't remember seeing any results, so thought I would post this quick comparison of an old WW-II bottle from the A.E. Halperin Company in Boston, a new bottle from current Ebay seller in Barbados providing Knights Ltd brand, and good old Noodler's Dragon's Napalm Ink.

 

The Ebay seller states clearly that his product is the real deal, still made/sold in Barbados. The original Mercurochrome (2% Merbromin) was outllawed in the USA in 1998 and another popular antiseptic/preservative called Methiolate (Thimiserol) has come under similar scrutiny for using mercury in its compounding, and allergic reactions.

 

As you can see from the photos, Nathan actually did a pretty good job of capturing the original mercury containing Mercurochrome, but Dragon's Napalm has a tiny bit more red...but very tiny.

 

I can feel the mercurial rage coursing through my veins from this test application. LOL!

Your dedication is awe inspiring! Not to mention highly entertaining. I wish that Noodler's smelled like the real thing, too. :)

Thanks for doing this. I have been curious to see how they match up - Nathan got it pretty close.

 

Is the back of your hand still orange? My memory is that you didn't wash off mercurochrome; you had to wait for it to wear off.

Yeah, after about 15 washes, it's still pretty striking, but a little lighter from all three. I may need to break out the Lava and Orange Goop.

Next time, paint some cool symbol on your hand, so it looks like a re-entry stamp for some hip club or something...

So do you think I could use Dragon's Napalm on a cut in place of mercurochrome? Did Nathan imbue his ink with healing properties as well as great color? :)

We could lather Dragon's Napalm all over as a part of "Occupy FDA" protests. Maybe get matching orange tents? Our slogan could be "We are the Infected 99." I nominate you to head it up!

The "Occupy ..." folks would smoke me out right away as being ill informed and inadequately enthusiastic, but I'd being willing to make posters and hold one. Do you think a bunch of folks "lathered" in Dragon's Napalm could be taken seriously? Perhaps we'd be seen as the Caribbean branch of Blue Man Group, with a unique message of fountain pen consciousness. And where would the protest occur? If here in Northern Minnesota we wear so many layers this time of year no one would notice I'd lathered all over, and those who did see my face would likely just assume I'd spent too long in the sauna.

What's amazing to me is that I very much doubt that Sam was drinking when this test was undertaken, simply deranged with the possibilities of ink "at hand", so to speak...

 

Sam, we need you to drop by one evening for some fine single malt whisky, an Islay or perhaps a Campbeltown - at least then you'll have a good excuse for these things !!! :wacko: :hmm1:

My Dad wouldn't allow us to use merthiolate or mercurochrome. We only had tincture of iodine after hexachlorophene came under suspicion of being carcinogenic.

 

We used to envy the other kids because they got that neat orange color, while we got brown.
