Five 149 Nibs

fpupulin

Recommended Posts

Dear FPNers, I thought you perhaps may like to have a close look to MB 149 nibs through some very enlarged photographs. I took them with a Leica MZ9.5 stereomicroscope fitted with a Leica microscope camera. Strong enlargements are a way to appreciate the great craftsmanship of MB nibmeisters. I have to complete the series with photographs of B, OB, OBB, and O3B nibs, but I still need to buy the pens before...

Wow. Beautiful stuff, this should be pinned. Any chance we get to see writing samples?

+1 yes, this should be pinned.

Great macro photographs there. Thank you for sharing!

Nice shots!!

So other than shooting nibs....why would you have a Leica microscope camera at your disposal? Just curious...

Though beautiful pictures, not sure this thread needs to be pinned...if it's ok with fpupuin....can one just download the shots for your own reference?

Well, apart from fountain pens and calligraphy and drawing, optics are my other passion. I am fortunate working as a botanist and spending a lot of time documenting plant diversity, when I am obliged making use of cameras and microscopes, and practicing my drawing skills. So, through the years, I made a branch of my office at home, where I spend most of my free times continuing working… I actually own a Leica MZ9.5 and a M50 stereomicroscopes.

In my opinion, Leica's range of microscope and stereomicroscope is unbeatable. If from a strictly technical, optic point of view, Zeiss microscopes are probably largely comparable, I find that Leica system is more modular in nature. Moreover, at least in stereoscopes, Leica uses the same coupling of their objective to the microscope bodies at least since the '80s of the last century, when they bought the Swiss, glorious brand of Wild. In a ever changing world, such a fidelity of more than 30 years is surely laudable.

I attached an image with some of my drawings at the stereoscope.

On the first row is a series of drawings made in pencil at the stereoscope, with the aid of a camera lucida (or drawing tube); from the left, the scan of a page from one of my drawing notebooks, and two drawings already "mounted" in Photoshop and ready to be inked.

On the second row, three of my ink drawings (the first one, Dichaea filiarum, is a species I dedicated to my daughters Marghertia and Carlotta., who where with me when we discovered the species). If interested, you can find many more of my drawings here: http://www.epidendra.org/taxones/Cryptarrhena/Cryptarrhena%20guatemalensis/lit.html

On the third row, my microscopes.

P.S. And, of course, anybody can download the image. Just let me know if you need one in somewhat higher resolution.

well done fpupulin

Nice drawings Fpupulin - I used to have quite a few orchids in my snake room, angraecas and vandellas etc. - all vanilla scented plants to help offset reptilian smells...

As a person paid to watch wildlife I also use some leica bits and pieces. However my need is further ranging and I have an APO Televid scope. Lovely thing and a joy to use a 30-60X zoom that provides a bright image all the way.

Thanks for sharing

thanks fpuplin.

This is why you have such lovely handwriting as well

You are very talented and I think we feel very happy you can share some of your talents with us.

Beautiful nib shots (those EF make me scared and even more so in macro shots :ninja: ).

And exquisite drawings indeed.

You definitely need the B and OBBB (can't wait to see that paintbrush!!) :clap1: :clap1:
