Leader And Ratnam Pens

Skyline74

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Here are 3 fountain pens made in India. The Ratnam pens are similar in size (and appearance!!) to the Parker Duofold Sr. The black button filler cap is only decorative as ink is poured directly into the barrel.

The Leader is similar in size to a oversize Parker vacumatic. In this pen to the ink is poured directly into the barrel. I haven't used any of these pens so I can't comment on how smooth their nibs are.

If anyone knows from what year these pens are please do let me know

Thanks.

Beautiful!, atleast to me, since I collect Indian made pens.

I suggest you send the pictures of the Ratnam to Mr KV Ramanamurthy for his comments and first hand information. The second Ratnam has a Brahmam marked nib, maybe a later swap. Leader was a Brahmam sub brand. Can you post some pictures of the feeder sides?

Those are sweet looking pens you've got there. Ink them up, I'm sure they are superb writers.

Parker "51" aerometric (navy grey)

Sheaffer Snorkel Saratoga (burgundy)

Sheaffer Imperial IV Touchdown (green)

Thanks Hari and Taurean for your replies.

Hari, I'll post pics of the feeder sides. I wasn't aware that Leader was a sub brand of Brahman. Could you put an approximate date on these pens?

Where are "Walty" nibs made, are they steel or gold?

Wality. It is a Trademark of the Airmail Pen Company, a fountain pen manufacturer in Mumbai. The nibs are gold plated steel.

Thank you for clarifying that, I just ordered a pen from the Ranga pen company, and they use these Wality nibs. Do you like these nibs yourself? I was wondering if I would want to change the nib later on.

The nib quality is commensurate with the price, IMHO. You may have to tune the nib further for an optimal performance. I am talking about the stock nibs as fitted on wality pens. I cannot comment on the nibs fitted to third party pens.

I tried posting pictures of the feed side of the pens, but it appears that I have used up the 4.88MB quota, so how do I post more pictures?

Do I have to post a link to a photo sharing website?

Use the new upload tab at the top of the main page to upload pictures. I I think that is what it's for...

Best,

Mike Truppi

Better to upload pictures to photobucket and just post the link here. Reduce the pictures to 800x600 size.

I'll try that, but any idea why the upload tab is not showing up? Does it appear on your web page

Can we call it 'The Ratnam Big Red'...? The pen is beautiful...I had always wanted a Big Red...If I can get one like this at least, I can be temporarily happy!!! I dont think Ratnam makes these kinds of pens these days...so, no chance...thanks for posting these pictures...keep the pens safe; these are examples of India's FP heritage...and as an Indian FP collector, I am happy that I got to see pics of a vintage Indian FP... and do write with them...

Regards,

Jai
