Pictures And Info On The Visconti's New Mecca & Medina

Here is the official Release...

Visconti is pleased to introduce the Mecca and Medina limited edition fountain pens. As always, Visconti pays special attention to themes that have impact, changing and describing life and the world in which we live. The Mecca and Medina are the latest additions to the Mystic Pen Collection, a series of fountain pens dedicated to all people and religions of the world. The Mecca and Medina pay tribute to the spiritual leader Muhammad, the founder of Islam.

Mecca

The great city of Mecca is the birthplace of Muhammad. Just outside of the city in a cave is where he received his first revelations from God, and thus, began the religion of Islam.

The body of the pen is turned from shiny black lucite to create a shape reminiscent of the architecture of the Kaaba, the most sacred site in Islam. This cube shaped building located in Mecca predates Islam and was built by Abraham, the father of the Hebrew nation. The Kaaba was made of granite from the surrounding hills outside Mecca.

Each of the four sides is scrimshawed with Arabic verses from the Qu'ran. They are inspired by the Kiswah, an embroidered black cloth that covers the Kaaba. The rings evoke the stone pieces used to build the structure. The pen is limited to 1622 pieces in honor of the year Muhammad and his followers migrated to Medina, also known as the Hijra.

Medina

Medina is the burial place of Muhammad, the second most sacred site in Islam. His tomb is located in one of the three oldest mosques in Islam.

The body of the pen is turned from ivory colored resin. The green marbled cap recalls the green dome under which Muhammad is buried. The microcast artwork around the pen signifies the doors leading to his tomb. The clip reminds us of the many columns that may be found inside the mosque. This pen is limited to 1622 pieces in honor of the Hijra.

Beautiful work,

Edit: I retract my statement, perhaps it is better I keep some opinions to myself. ;)

Not necessarily my style, but impressive design and detail nonetheless.

I imagine the target audience for these is the UAE and Saudi Arabia, where I'm sure they'll be appreciated.

The Mecca is a really good looking art piece, with nice calligraphy. The Medina...never been a fan of overlay pens. Never is of interest to me, since they are not designed to be functional.

I prefer the Medina. I absolutely love Islamic art and calligraphy, but I'd personally prefer something less obviously religious. Still, I wouldn't feel at all weird carrying the Medina around.

I noticed another thing in the "Mecca" it is issued in 1622 pieces, but Mohammed "escaped" to Medina in 622 AD. Is that a typo (622 pieces) or not?

Darn that sharp step down to the section. Did they HAVE to pull a Montblanc with a pen I've been interested in for ages?! :crybaby: :gaah: :gaah: :gaah: :bonk:

Same concern for the Medina. Any pictures of the silver version?

No, its not a typo, it was wrong though... They came out with the correction today. Actually there will only be 622 of the "silver" versions...

The pen is actually Vermeil. Not silver... Sorry...

Yes really, the sharp step thing seems to be intentional punishment from both MB and Visconti lately! But otherwise, both designs are really beautiful.

I shall simply have to sit down with my design partner and do better. :hmm1:

Picks up her Spirit of Life, pulls out her copy of the Quran, and meditates upon the possibilities inherent in combining a pen that is comfortable to use with beautiful inspiration.

I believe he's head of the Saudi intelligence service these days ....possibly not 'into' FPs!!

Having said that, smart Saudi businessmen practically all have gorgeous writing sets and watches ....one explained to me that their religion forbids 'jewellery' as such, but that pens & watches can sneak through!

(The guy I was talkin' about in the first para came into work one day and I admired his watch ....a platinum & diamond Rolex  ..... he told me that he'd been given it while he and his brother (King Faisal) were visiting the factory )

Just to defend Visconti here - they are following the same basic layout as in the other "theme" pens ( Bible pens, Declaration) and although the shape may not be to everyone's taste, I think both designs are very well done. The Medina would go beautifully with the other white resin theme pens....

Sorry, Rock. Didn't mean to slam Visconti [too much]. After all, they DID do Mecca and Medina pens. I don't own the Bible series pens either for the same reason - just not usable pens and I frankly expected better of Visconti. After beauties like the Romanicas and Ripples, I wanted more artistic pens given the subject.

Guess I want a combination of art and form. It's like Ferrarri putting out cars with 40 mile range electric motors and a lawn chair bolted in for seats. You know they can do better!

:roflmho: :roflmho: :roflmho: you're right...

Well, they still need to do a Bahá'i pen....get in touch with them NOW, and make yourself heard!
