Experience W/the Meisterstück 3 Pen Pouch

Sanmay

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

The MB Boutique advised me not to store my MB in the case book once I start using it as there is a chance of leakage. I was just going through the pen cases and came across:

http://www.wheelersluxurygifts.com/shop/item/490/3060/montblanc-pen-pouch---meisterstuck

Is this a good purchase? Has anybody used this? Will it keep the MB Mark Twain safe without damage? (lets say when there is only 1 pen and later when there are 3 pens)

Thanks!

I have used one of these cases for about 3 years or so. It seems to do a great job of protecting my 149, Wall St LE, and other large pens. It does not seem to introduce any wear to the pens, and the case does not have any marks or wear after years of fairly consistent use. It carries well in my brief case or even in my suit pocket. I have found other hard cases, such as Conway Stewart's 3 pen hard case wallet, to be a bit too cumbersome to carry on a daily basis.

Pardon my ignorance but what is the "case book" that one is not supposed to store the pen in?

The Writer's Edition pens come in a box that looks like a book. I guessed it was called the 'case book.' The MB boutique told me it's all right to store the pen in it if unused. But not to do so once the pen is filled with ink and used.

Oh, thanks, Sanmay. I didn't know that. Wonder why it could hurt the pen once there is ink in it.

They said the pen could leak if placed in the box and in turn damage the box.

Congratulations on your beautiful pen.

The Meisterstuck 3 is my favorite case, I have (4) four of them, and carry a variety of 149s and 146s, with no problems for the last year. But, the divider strips only extend half way down the case and are attached only to the back of the case, not the front. This has caused concern for some owners, but my pens have remained in pristine condition.

And I am the fussy type.

The Pelikan 3 pen leather case is also excellent and provides perfect protection for large pens. In my opinion, for a third of the cost of the Montblanc case, it is of equal quality. But, it has the Pelikan Logo on it(fussiness comes with a price).

My MB cases came from a very nice seller on eBay.

Thanks for your info bookmanj and karmakoda. The Pelikan Leather Pen Case 3 Slot looks good. Will try and see if it's available where I live...it's 1/3rd the price! As long as it it can safely store 3 large MB pens (though I currently own 1), works for me.

I didn't realize a MB pen could leak sitting in the box. Thank you.

I can attest to the quality of the Pelikan pen case. I have one and use it for Pelikan pens. For everyday I don't need to carry a pen case because there is a pen holder built into my purse but for traveling I use vintage leather cigar cases. They do a good job and look rather neat.

I have a single, double and triple case and love them. Do damage to the pens (inc my Twain) sk would recommend one to you.

I'd me more worried about damaging the book box through repeated opening/closing or pushing the pen into it's slot than it leaking.

I am sorry but I did not quite get the meaning of this sentence:

"Do damage to the pens (inc my Twain) sk would recommend one to you."

The case damages the pens?

Pardon the hasty shots, a side by side comparison may be helpful.

The Pelikan case is always at the left in the photos. The divider strips are almost full length in that case, 1/2 length in the MB. The Pelikan retails at Art Browns and The Fountain Pen Hospital for $45.00 compared to $129.00 for the Meisterstuck,(see link in my first reply) making the MB case 2.86 times more expensive, give or take shipping.

Both of these retailers are excellent, but I'm not sure about international shipping.

So why did I buy four Montblanc Meisterstuck cases? (I am one of Montblanc's biggest fans, easily brainwashed and manipulated.) They are simple, beautiful and functional. The Pelikan is easily as functional. Both these cases can accommodate the 149, which some pouches cannot. Neither case will cause damage to your pen(s).

Good Luck.

Thank you Mr. Karmakoda. I will purchase the Pelikan pen pouch and give it a whirl.

I noticed that you don't clip your pens in, i.e. the clip isn't showing when the pen is in the pouch.

Why?

Hi Matt

The Meisterstuck and Pelikan pouches hold the pens securely without clipping and the clips can cause permanent dents in the leather. I know it's a little ridiculous, but I do not like the sound of the clips clicking on the resin, so I never use them.

Did I mention I was fussy? Everyone has their burden to bear.

Hope you find the Pelikan case satisfactory. Mine carries a 149, my best 146 and a Noblesse.

I have no idea why some of the images I posted are not displaying?? Unless it's just on my computer.

I do understand keeping the presentation box of a WE, or any MB, in mint condition. But of far greater concern than the box is the salesperson's statement that the pen might leak. What are they saying about their own product, and why would a pen of that caliber leak? Of course the pen should not be stored inked in the presentation box for air travel, a bouncy trip in a moving van, or for any extended period of time, but that's common sense. I wonder if they were just trying to upsell a case? If so, it's a rather bizarre strategy.

(Apologies if this is an ignorant observation. I am an aspiring Montblanc owner and have been lurking here to learn as much as I can.)

I use mine everyday with 3 Meisterstück Pens inside - no problem whatsoever, I can't see why it wouldn't be a good idea. (the 3 pen Siena case)

About the "book" -> I'd actually be more worried about the paper wearing out with regular use.

Even I thought they were trying to upsell a case though not sure if a MB boutique would resort to do that. Because they didn't offer to show cases as such. They said I can store it anywhere else...I am guessing maybe they were saying 'if the pen leaks,' the box will get spoilt. I guess a precautionary measure since it is a LE box.

As the experience of people in this forum has shown over time, not every salesperson in the Montblanc boutiques is a perfect repository of MB fountain pen product knowledge.

While it would be great if they all had deep and broad knowledge of the writing instrument offerings, the nature of running the retail business of the boutiques may prevent it. Training is expensive, and fountain pen knowledge is something we've all acquired over time because we have personal interest in it.
