Sailor Red Brown Vs. Diamine & Montblanc Inks

It has been said in several threads that the closest color to the now discontinued Sailor Red Brown ink is Diamine's Burn Sienna. Thought I would do a few comparisons to have on file here. Paper is Staples Eco tablet. Pen is Brause double reservoir Ornamental 0.5mm Dip Pen nib (Thumbnail)

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

Thanks for doing this! Red-brown was one of my favorite inks; I've been trying to find a suitable replacement since it was discontinued.

Diamine Dark Brown looks closer than Burnt Sienna in my opinion, though neither of them are close enough for me. I recently bought a couple of bottles of Sailor Kobe Arima Amber because it is the best alternative to Red-brown that I've come across--I can't distinguish much difference in side-by-side comparisons. Of course, Arima Amber isn't exactly a widely-available ink...

I just added the Kobe and rescanned, and replaced original version, so refresh your browser to see it.

Sam, you are awesome!

Arima Amber looks closer to Burnt Sienna in your scan than I thought. To me, Arima Amber is almost indistinguishable from Sailor Red-brown (Red-brown is just a little darker and a little more red, but they are very close). I tried samples of Diamine Burnt Sienna and Dark Brown last year when trying to find a replacement to Red-brown. I ended up ordering a bottle of Dark Brown just because I liked it so much better--even though it's not close enough to be a replacement. I remember thinking Burnt Sienna was too brown, but I will definitely revisit that option.

Could J. Herbin's Terre de Feu fit into that range, too?

Added. May need to refresh browser.

Thanks for the comparison. Thankfully I bought a few bottles of Red-Brown before it disappeared. Diamine Monaco Red is a reasonable substitute, if only because it is such a nice color. Incidentally, Monaco Red looks a little darker in person, at least on this Clariefontaine paper. I have many more reds but I don't think any others come this close. Interestingly, I bought Rustic Brown as a possible Red-Brown replacement. Goes to show you can't always tell based on a swab.
