Sheaffer Balance Pressure Bar

While I was putting a new sac in this Sheaffer lever fill I noticed an odd looking J pressure bar.

However, I have very little experience so perhaps it is common.

Is there a plate missing between the two long flat bits of metal?

The new sac is in and it seems to work

Is there someplace that sells the original Sheaffer pressure bars?

Your best bet is to purchase a junk pen and harvest the pressure bar if you want an original OR find someone willing to sell you one. CAUTION: Sticker shock may apply, good originals of this particular type are somewhat hard to find as they suffer the fate you have observed-broken.

How well do the regular J/pressure bars work in the Balances? Also will just a regular J bar work in the Balances, or do you have to have part of the old pressure bar? Sorry this seems to be highjacking the thread.

I have replaced this pressure bar with a new J bar and the lever has become loose, it drops away from the barrel if you shake the pen. Last year I had exactly the same problem with a Sheaffer lever fill. The replacement new j bar would not hold the lever firmly against the barrel of the pen. I think the problem is the pressure plate is too wide.

I don't know if it is possible to buy a new pressure bar designed for Sheaffer pens? I am wondering if I could construct a new pressure plate and add it to the existing pressure bar?

There are a few NOS J bars from Sheaffer in circulation, but they are few and hard to find. An aftermarket J bar is your best option. I have a few around, but they tend to break rather easily, so keep a stock of Woodbin J bars in stock.

The J bars made today have a channel that is U shaped |_| The sides are too deep, and hit the inside wall of the barrel before the spring part makes contact with the end of the lever. This allows the lever to flop around in the gap, and is the cause of your problem.

The answer is to grind down the sides of that channel so that it is flush, or almost flush with the spring. It doesn't hurt to bevel the outside edge of the channel a bit to allow for the curve of the barrel.

Good information, a fix I had not considered, but will implement in future.thumbup.gif
