M400 or M600?

According to Richard Binder's website, the dimensions of the M400 and the M600 are just the slightest of bits different. Assuming that cost is a bit of an object but also knowing that I don't want something TOO small (the Lamy 2000 is what I would consider the "perfect" size for me), what would you most sage advisors of Pelikan recommend?

There's quite a bit of difference in a M400 and M600 in size, when you have both side by side. I use both daily, and really don't have much of a preference. Some people are really sensitive to size, I feel blessed not to be.

If you are sensitive to size, it is best to try them out before buying.

I find the M215 to be a little small for comfort, but the L2K and the M605 are comfortable for me.

Here are some views of the bodies that might help.

From left to right: new style 600, old style OMAS Milord, old style 600, 200 (400 is the same body size), OMAS 630.

As you can see, the length of the 600 body is only slightly longer but the girth is considerably wider. The nib on the 600 is also slightly larger than the 200/400 and makes up almost half the total body length difference.

I don't find the 600 to be very large -- in fact, I consider it a very middle-size pen. It fits my hand very well, and is the right weight -- very light.

I have chosen the 600 over the 400 and am very happy.

I'm a lousy photographer but perhaps the following pics give you an idea of the relative sizes:

The three with caps on:

The three uncapped:

The difference in size isn't that great with their caps off. In fact, the Pelikan 600 feels as if it's the biggest of the three when writing, at least to my hands.

Are you referring to he "old" M600 or the "new" M600?

Current M600 are larger than the older version, which was indeed close to the M400.

Have a look at Richard's website. Towards the bottom of the Pelikan page you can find some size comparisons.

Maybe it helps.

And you are absolutely correct; the Lamy 2000 is a very ergonomic pen.

My favorite Pelikan size is the 600 and I also really like the Lamy 2000. I would say those two are closer in size than the Lamy and the 400.

Thank you all so very much. The photos help, but I've been put on an involuntary pen hiatus (something about my mother and her graduation presents), but once it is lifted early June I think I'll get the M600 barring mother buying me an M600 (unlikely. I'm actually pretty worried about what she's getting me, but she's also been known to throw me off the scent with "hints" like this).

Seriously, though. You guys are amazing. I wish I had a store near me (I live in Madison, WI) where I could try the Pelikan, however there is nowhere I know of where this would be possible here. I might drive to Milwaukee or drive to Northern IL and take the train to Chicago

As Bill said, the M215 may be a bit smallish for your hand but think of its extra weight and heft! If you want to go all the way, think about an M800.

University Book Store downtown stocks some Pelikans. I think they only have M200s, but it might be worth asking. You could call Daly's Pen Shop in Milwaukee though, since they have a wider collection. Sadly, there's not a whole lot of options here.

I've been considering that. Even though the Lamy 2000 is perfect in my opinion, it is very ergonomic, something which I don't think can be said of the Pelikans, and anyways it is nearly exactly the same size as the M600. I have large hands, so for this pen the M800 would probably be best, but I'm still mulling it over. I'll call around and see what I can see.

UW Bookstore, either on the library mall, or at Hilldale.

Or come to Cafe Zoma tomorrow afternoon, say 4pm, and you can try out some of my pens. I don't have a Pelikan 600, though.

I have a 250 (like 200) and a 600, both a great pens, but even the 600 is a bit on the small side for my taste.

After much consideration about what this pen will be used for (and how it compares to other pens of mine), I have decided to go with a green striped M600 with a B nib. Thanks all!

I am new to the board and new to fountain pens in general, but I recently purchased my first and it was a Pelikan 600. I absolutely love it.

While in the store, I picked up quite a few pens and all of the Pelikan line. The 800 was just out of my price range but of the others I liked the 600 by far. It did feel quite a bit different in my hand than the 400, that could have been simply a mental thing but I felt like a difference existed.

I can say though that I am extremely thrilled with my 600 and would recommend the pen to anyone!

Happy hunting.
