3, Flurries Of Activity, Pencils,

Right from the start, there were pencil trademarks. See trademark no. 00019 mentioned in an earlier post in this series, and Eberhard Faber's trademark no. 00117 from Dec 27, 1870, and used since the spring of 1851, for the name "A. W. Faber". There were various flurries of activity in the USPTO record, and I'll post about some of those other flurries later in this series, but starting with trademark nos. 00956 to 00966, the Orestes Cleveland registered certificates for "Lead-Pencils", Aug 20, 1872, the "Dixon" pencil trademarks, and continuing in the following years, the pencil trademarks came in a torrent as the various other pencil companies rushed to protect their pencil names and marks. Maybe it was just a coincidence, or maybe they were trying to distinguish themselves from all the others, and trying to stop the counterfeiters and the imitators.

I have added sufficient zeroes to the trademark numbers to perform the searches, so if you want to perform the trademark searches yourselves, simply cut and paste, or type the trademark numbers into the search window in the Registration Certificate Portlet. --G.
