Mont Blanc Nicolai I 146 (Malachite )

Hi all,

When I picked this pen up a little more then a year ago I had no idea that this pen was discontinued. All I remember was “Oooo… nice pen… got to have one”. It was only after I got this pen did I find out more about it.

Nib:

Standard 2 tone 18k gold nib. Originally this pen came with a B nib but I had Mont Blanc service center to swap it to a fine nib. The nib is very smooth, comparable to my Sailor 1911 nib, but not as stiff as the Sailor nib.

Body:

The cap was made from Malachite powder then lacquer into the cap and the body is platinum plated.

Conclusion:

MSRP: $1200

This pen is heavier than my Carbon Steel pen but it is very well balance. The platinum body is shinning and it appears to be less prone to micro scratches.

This pen looks much better in person especially compare to other steel models because of the platinum shine. Is it worth it? Yes, I wish Mont Blanc had made more of these semi-precious gem stone pen it is both nice to use and nice to look at.

I also own this pen and love it, the look in person and feel of it is incredible, platinum has a feel to it that is hard to discribe and the malachite cap has depth to it.

Wow, thanks for the review. I have been thinking about purchasing one of these and now I want one more than ever. The only thing that kept me from the Rameses is the gold colour. I am not a big fan of it but I love the lapis cap. I like the silvery finish best and this Nikolai fits in very well with what I like.

Thanks again and I hope it brings you many years of pleasure.

What nib do you have?

It used to have an B

That malachite would look darn good on a custom Pelikan binde :-)

Hum.... never really thought about it. I have few Pelikan's (M1005, M800 Tortoise and M600) and I love them dearly. However, to me I view Pelikan as working pen not as much as Jewelry pen like this one.

I remember that before I went into pen collecting I always stared at this pen

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I own this pen in the Vermeil version (in my signature). I have a M nib. A wonderful and beautiful pen. Congratulations on your pen! (From many years ago as this is a very old post!)

~ Recently a friend asked if there were images of the Montblanc Czar Nikolai I platinum 146 pen.

That's a model I'd never thought about, but committed myself to look in FPN.

It's a welcome discovery that this thread has exactly the images my friend wants.

Once again, FPN provides useful information in visual form.
