What pen for a doctor?

A beautiful pen for a woman, in my opinion, is the Montblanc Greta Garbo LE.

It is elegant and feminine, good prerequisites for your wife's Birthday gift.

- I agree, a beautiful and elegantly feminine pen.

If something more practical is needed the aforementioned VP would be a good choice.

EDIT. There's always the option of getting both :)

I gifted my soon to be father in law, and avid LE pen collector, his first VP and he loves it (at work) due to its reliability and single hand use.

I am a Teacher and have to write on the move as well. I have used many fountain pens but my recent revelation has been to use a Pilot Capless (VP in the USA). It is both very practical and a superb writer.

I thought there would be lots of limited editions with snakes or any medical symbol and it seems that VP is your best choice.

The office I work for is going "paperless" in a few months. :crybaby: Pretty much the only thing I'll need my FP for is signing prescriptions. It's even possible to electronically send those to the pharmacy, but thankfully I don't think the office manager knows about that technology. ;)

I just use whatever fountain pen I have inked. This week it's a Parker 51. A few weeks ago it was a Sheaffer Cadet Tip-Dip, and before that a Lamy 2000. My favorite brand of lab coat has a little sectioned off area of the front pocket for a pen. It's a bit narrow though so I imagine a really large pen might be too snug to take in and out easily. (I don't have too many really large pens though.)

My best friend from medical school (whom I infected with the FP bug) uses a vanishing point pen. At one time he used a Pelikan M100 and a Montblanc Lapis lazuli but found having to take the cap off inconvenient. I am a pathologist, so I use whatever my mood instructs me. Currently I am using a Lamy Safari and a Pelikan M600 because one is not enough!

I'm a pathologist as well - go figure, today I used my Lamy Safari (pink) and an assortment of Pelikans (M620, M400), along with a Sheaffer Snorkel filled with Bulletproof Black for signing lab reports.

I have never liked any of the "doctor" pens I have EVER seen (and I like a lot of different pens). IMHO, +1 for Pilot Vanishing Point for practicality, otherwise, just a general nice pen (hard to go wrong with a Pelikan)...

The other issue these days with the profession is electronic med-records that are very common now... so there isnt very much to write anymore.. at least at work. So take that into consideration. Regardless if she tends to write a lot at work... remember that hospital/clinic charts dont use Clairefontaine 90g paper! They use the worst kind that bleeds through somtimes even with a ball point.

I work with EMRs every day and still have plenty of need for a pen. I carry a variety of FPs and have generally good luck. of course, i carry my own note pads that are friendlier than the stuff that is just lying around the office.

I dont know what a Doctor's Pen Is? Probably a marketing gimmick to get people to buy expensive pens.

You are right. However, when you like your job, you sometimes also like objects which are related to it. What you call marketing can also be called a symbol.

I am a doctor too and from experience I can tell you... unless your wife is in one of the well dressed specialties and spends most time in a clinic or on a desk... she is likely to lose/misplace whatever you buy her. So eb careful. If she is a collector... its another story...

You're right once again. I know that. However, in that case, anything above a simple BIC will be useless.

the same reason why people drive a porsche vs a toyota. from point a to b isn't the point. it's the experience and what it means to you personally.

Nah, you've got it all wrong. A doctor pen, a true doctor's pen, has a thermometer integrated into it, or a set with a thermometer in a matching housing. Here.

I got this Waterman set on eBay recently. They are often called "nurse sets", but I think anyone in the medical profession can enjoy them!

I also have an Esterbrook nurse set, but no thermometer holder. (they exist, but are difficult to find!)

Nice pen set.

But the vintage Doctor's Set of Fountain Pen, Mechanical Pencil, and Thermometer is no longer useful for its intended purpose.

Medical Record notations must never be made in pencil - the medical record must be unaltered and unalterable.

And the standard unshielded oral thermometer included in Doctor's Sets would violate modern infection control and cross-contamination policies.

So while these vintage sets are historically nice, only the Fountain Pen can be used in contemporary medical practice.

Very nice.

But that's a mercury thermometer. If you drop and break it in the hospital, a HazMat Team will have to do the clean-up.

My wife works in a cardiovascular services unit. A few years ago I bought a couple of neat sets like this from a fellow veteran in Oregon. I gave them to her because I thought they were a really neat gift for nurses week. I should have wasted my money on flowers.

I still think they are pretty cool sets though. I think Waterman has a set of three pieces. Black, Red and White.

Oh - and you have to evacuate the area - usually quite inconvenient in a hospital setting.

They came through all the labs and collected and got rid of all of the mercury thermometers remaining. If they find any when we're inspected, we get a deficiency.
