My new Polar Lights

Rap

Recommended Posts

Recently, I saw another FPN thread about the Pelikan Polar Lights. The colour and shape of it in the photos and the descriptions of a little more weight and good balance were very appealing. So a week ago I sent an email to Pam and after an inpatient week of waiting, there is now a new member of my bird family.

Pam is just the best to deal with. She also supplied my Piccadilly Circus a few years ago.

In preparation, I went to a local shop and bought some Private Reserve Avacado. I had really hoped to find a bottle of discontinued Mont Blanc Racing Green, which I've never seen in person. Apparently I missed their last bottle by two days. Another ink junkie prodded on by FPN no doubt! As it turns out, I like the Avacado anyway.

The Polar Lights has an 18C-750 F nib and is very smooth. No flow issues. I like the size and heft and bulging tummy. It's intermediate between the other 600 family members and the 800. This is going to be my daily writer for the next few weeks.

Thanks for looking.

It's a very pretty pen - and nice ink as well. I'm always on-guard about green inks;

writing in green ink is considered the signature of a raving-loony, writing a "Disgusted

of Tunbridge Wells" letter ( no offence intended ! ). Many colleagues have noticed this

tendency and whilst I'd like to give the green ink a try, instinct tells me that the

recipient would have a restraining order slapped upon me on the strength of the ink colour alone !

Wow, I'd never known about the "raving-loony" quality of green ink!!! I guess I completely fall in that camp having many different shades and loving them all. I prefer a nice dark green ink that has decent shading over black, blue, or any combination of the two. My only color that I like even more is a sepia/dark brown like Kiowa Pecan. I bet you can tell a lot about a person by their ink choices :) :roflmho:

What a beautiful collection of Pelikans. Your taste is close to my own.

Until I saw them side to side, I'd not realized that the size of the Northern Lights and it's siblings were larger in length & girth than the Piccadilly. Also, the Northern Lights cap is shorter and the barrel longer...

I've recently been tempted by the Sahara. Pam has had those at a very nice price. So far I've resisted but your post isn't helping with my resolve.

The cap is most definitely shorter. I post the cap when I write, and I think the shorter cap keeps the pen better balanced when posted.

The barrel lengths are very similar though. Perhaps the 640 is shade longer, but the nib a hair shorter, so overall they come out the same. Or maybe my Polar lights nib is just set a little deeper.

I recently got a Polar Lights from Pam also. She has the best prices and is excellent to work with. No affiliation - just a satisfied repeat customer.

The Polar Lights pen is an EXCELLENT pen. Love the look and the nib is awesome.

Thanks for the pictures. I have been mulling over getting another Pelikan from Pam, but I have had a hard time deciding on one.

Enjoy your pen!

I'm told George Bernard Shaw used green ink.....it used-to be regarded as a sign of an eccentric!

Its a beautiful pen, I love the 640 series. I have the Niagara falls. Your picture is the best I've seen of the Polar lights and shows how nice a pen it is. I've been thinking about the Mt Everest that Pam has for quite a while but I can't seem to pull the trigger so far. Enjoy it.

This is the best picture of a Polar Lights I've ever seen.

And, +1 on Pam being a joy to work with. I got a great deal on a 625 back in July.

Great pics! The 600's are just the absolute perfect size pen for me. I'll have to get some kind of 640 one day I know.

I ran into a "green ink" thread here at FPN earlier and it taught me some interesting things. I'm not saying there is anything remotely true about those who love green ink, but just for entertainment purposes, here is a link to the wiki on the Green Ink Brigade.

Wow, thanks for the photos and review! I also have been looking at a Polar Lights and Sahara from Pam. I just need a little cash infusion to pull the trigger. Earlier this week I was at Castle in the Air in Berkley, CA and got to check out the M600 for the first time and compared it side by side with the M800. I prefer bigger pens. Your photos show more clearly than what I've seen before how the Polar Lights compares in size. I agree that it looks like a transition between the other 600 series and the 800. Looks like a great size to me.

BTW, I picked up some J. Herbin Vert Olive ink while I was at Castle in the Air. This is my first real attempt at using green ink. I think now I should convince the wife that I need the Polar Lights pen to match my ink! ;)

Great Pelikan collection. That Polar Ligths looks amazing.

BTW, the Avocado ink looks really similar to the Montblanc Racing Green, so it could be a good replacement.

Which pen reseller is Pam with? --I see her name mentioned frequently but I don't know which company she is with. --Thanks!

P.S. I just got the Mount Everest in this series and it's far more stunning "in person" than on a computer screen. It's my new favorite pen, so much so that I think I'm going to sell my red M600 and blue M205 demonstrator to finance another pen in this series. The Sahara and Indian Summer are at the top of my want list.

Thanks!
