I second the motion. No book is perfect, even Frank's, but Da Book is the one piece of literature anyone who wants to work on pens should absolutely have.

Don't know of one - would appreciate anyone identifying info sources they know of. I did a search on FPN for Mechanical Pencils, and didn't find any specific repair related info other than identification of jammed leads as being the most frequent cause of problems (DWL I think).

I am not aware of a comprehensive single volume on the repair of pencils, but many manufacturers published their own factory repair manuals for the use of their dealers or authorized repair stations back in the day. I can't attest to what other manufacturers put out, but Eversharp (Wahl-Eversharp) did make and send out repair manuals for their pens AND pencils. My library includes a good number of these, mostly from 1923 on the traditional eversharps and then again from the period 1937-8 through about 1948. I have to believe that this type of material exists from other manufacturers as well.

Thanks for the reminder Syd. I have a copy of the Pen Fanciers Club (PFC) compilation of repair manuals for Sheaffer Parker and Eversharp - and indeed, there is some info there about the pencils.

There are many reasons for some reluctance to offer a list of repairers complete with 'ratings'. Some of them were discussed elsewhere in this forum. I am willing to consider establishing one that lists known repairers in each country however. I would certainly prefer if the names were added as a recommendation from a satisfied customer, but that shouldn't be a necessary factor.

 

We need to start this topic in the regular forum, perhaps asking for testimonials, and if there is a good response, We'll consider adding it to the pinned list of topics here...

What I'm asking for is a sort of handy 'quick-reference', though comprehensive, affair that people over on this side of the Atlantic could use to help them find repair people.

It is called 'Pen Repair' and is by Jim Marshall and Laurence Oldfield. In three parts, it deals with the basics of pen repair (including some data on pencils), specific pens (mostly US and UK pens) and specialist techniques. The book is in full colour and the text is centred around high resolution photographs of dismantled pens.

I have a Stipula fountain pen that I've had for 7 years. It has started skipping, the cap split and the cap ring fell off...lost. Where do I send it for repairs? Italy? Where do I obtain a performa to send with the pen? Thanks.
