Parker 51 repair

Recommended Posts

Hello,

this is my first P51, but unfortunately it has broken small piece of plastic where the sac is mounted on. That piece is stuck in sac - in the filling mechanism. I wonder if there is some way to repair it, but i don´t know which kind of glue use on it...

Please help :)

Ouch!

Have a P51 demi with the same issue. :bonk:

The only way to get this repaired is to find a replacement coupler.

You might ask David Nishimura (http://www.vintagepens.com) or Ernesto Soler (http://www.parker51.com) about it.

Edit: Just in case my answer does not help:

Soak the section to get the innards as clean as possible. Lukewarm water would be ok. Add 10% ammonia if available. Best bet would be some circles in the ultrasonic cleaner. You should get the breather tube loose before you start working on the section to prevent the breather tube from breaking.

Now you have to get the section hood off. Usually shellac is used to keep it in place. You need heat to soften the shellac so that the hood comes off (section goes into hot water, count to 10 and try to unscrew. Repeat until the hood does unscrew). Usually you grip the coupler to unscrew the hood. This might become a challenge with the broken coupler. At least you could get a grip at the thread (does belong to the coupler).

Good luck!

If I am understanding correctly it seems as the rear part of the section upon which the sac fits has broken off and is stuck inside the filler housing. If that is correct, I am afraid the only satisfactory option for repair will be to remove the parts stuck inside the filler housing and then replace the damaged section and install a new ink sac.

Khufu,

be careful with feed tube, yours seems to be the early one (no plastic made ) it's very fragile...easy to damage,

good luck,

René.

Have a look at the picture below-- the metal protector is threaded onto an all-plastic connector. Whoever you talk to about a new part (I got mine from Ernesto), make sure you tell them as much as possible about the age of the pen, as there's a couple of different versions of that connector-- the barrel of one version won't go onto the connector of another. And yes, be cautious with the breather tube.

Very clear "anatomical" picture of the 51 , M. Bitterman.

The creature seems suddenly so simple ... :)

Merci.

Hello!

Thank you very much for shared informations.

I think i wait until i´ll be more experienced with this kind of repair. I have just received one more P51 - a blue vacumatic but with damaged nib (it wasn´t specified by the ebayer  ). On this one the hood can be unscrewed easily, so i can see inside :ninja: It looks very different of other pens i have, and rather fragile, too.

P51 are very nice pens, that´s for sure! I hope to write with it soon.

Great photo, thanks!

On my P51 is actually the end piece of "connector" broken. Where the sac is mounted on. So i have to find an undamaged connector and exchange it. It should not be so difficult...

If one is so inclined, you can bore out the end of the sac guard/connector, and replace the sac nipple. A piece of a barrel machined from a Papermate stick pen will work. Otherwise you look for a replacement sac guard/connector.

As Ernst pointed out, there are two or three versions of this connector.

The early one has threads for the "press 6 times" sac guard to screw onto, but no space for an 0 ring. The barrel threads go all of the way down to the clutch ring. The sac guard is chrome plated, and the plating often flakes off. This is the one shown in Earnst's picture. Be careful trying to remove the sac guard. It's not uncommon to find that the threads are badly corroded, preventing removal.

The second version has the "press 4 times" sac guard, the sac guard presses onto the connector. It has an area in front of the clutch ring for the 0 ring, and the barrel threads do NOT go all of the way down to the clutch ring, so the barrel has to have the threads on the edge of the barrel machined away. The sac guard is brushed stainless steel

The third version is for the MK III, and has much coarser threads for the hood, and is a IIRC, a smaller diameter.

Thanks for advice!

I think i´ll try to connect it together with a piece of plastic tube. For fixing it tight i´ll use some shellac, right?
